How To Properly Buy And Store Your Firewood For The Winter Season

It’s that time of year again and winter is upon us.  Now is the time most people start thinking about buying firewood.  However, there are a few things you should know before you run out and buy your firewood for the season.

1.  The best types of wood to use as firewood are oak, hickory and ash because they’re harder, more dense and will burn longer.

2.  Try to use firewood that has been thoroughly dried or seasoned.  Dry firewood will burn more efficiently and won’t produce as much smoke.  This will help you avoid an excessive build up of creosote in your chimney.

3.  Avoid poplar, pine and spruce firewood if possible.  These woods typically burn more quickly causing you to go through it faster.

4.  A common question is “what is a cord?”  A cord is equal to an eight foot long stack of wood that is four feet tall and four feet wide.  However, firewood is not usually sold in that size which can make purchasing firewood a bit confusing.  Talk to your neighbors about how much firewood they go through each season to help you determine what you might need.

5.  It’s best to store your firewood on pallets, or something similar, to keep your firewood off the ground.  You should also keep your wood in an area that has sun and good air flow to help keep it dry.
