Halloween safety tips for homeowners.
The time of year has arrived where there are pumpkins everywhere and face paint is flying off the shelves. That’s right, Halloween is well and truly underway. From ghosts, goblins, and witches to the latest pop-culture heroes and villains, this is the time of year where creativity hits an all-time high as people far and wide celebrate the spookiest season of all, Halloween!
Whether you’re hosting a party or will be receiving trick-or-treaters on this fright night, take the time to prepare your home now.
Clear the path for guests.
Costumes often include fancy wigs, complicated masks, and endless accessories. Your priority should be to clear the walkway up to the front door and remove debris, tripping hazards, and low-hanging decorations. In addition, ensure that the walkway is entirely visible. You may need to turn on outside lights or add in lights so that the path is well-lit throughout the night.
Avoid accidents with lights.
You will or you already have carved out a pumpkin, after all, it’s Halloween! Instead of lighting your jack-o-lantern with a real candle, which poses many fire risks, opt for LED tea lights that are battery operated. This way, should a pumpkin get knocked over, there is no risk of fire! These are a good option for indoor and outdoor decorations where you cannot keep an eye on a burning candle at all times.
Keep furry friends inside.
Halloween is an exciting time for you and your children, but also for your pets! Many cats and dogs will get anxious and frantic from all the visitors. To stop them from escaping, getting into the candy, or getting scared of the guests, shut them in a safe room with the TV turned on to drown out the noise. Since they don’t get to enjoy all the fun, leaving them with a Halloween treat will keep them entertained until the activity has subsided.
Be smart about sweets.
If you can help it, avoid leaving unwatched candy. While you’re hosting a party inside or watching a scary movie, it’s only natural to think that putting a bowl of candy on your doorstep for trick-or-treaters is a good idea. However, it encourages people to tamper with the treats that you’ve left out. Instead, leave a note at the bottom of your driveway.
