Ask These Before Lowering Your Car Insurance Coverage

Consider these questions before dropping full coverage auto insurance.

There can come a time when you feel that you can lower your car insurance coverage. You should know exactly what coverage you’ll be dropping, and how this impacts your policy and protection. In order to determine if you should lower your insurance, consider these five questions.

What am I giving up?
Typically, full coverage is comprehensive, collision, and liability coverage on one policy. It tends to not include extras like towing and labor, roadside assistance, rental car coverage, and other add-ons. Therefore, what some people consider ‘full’ is actually just the bare minimum. When full coverage is removed, your policy will empty to leave liability coverage. This means that you have no coverage for your vehicle at all.

Do I owe on the car?
Determine if you’re even allowed to drop comprehensive and collision coverage. Newer vehicles that are financed are often required to have full coverage from the bank and lienholder until the car is paid for.

What’s the value of my car?
Establishing the value of your car will help decide if it is worth less than the policy. A car depreciates with age, and more often than not, repairs cost more than the value of the vehicle. Use online sources to find an estimate of your car’s worth.

How much is collision coverage costing me?
Collision coverage provides a big portion of your monthly bill, as property damage is one of the highest costs in an accident. If you’re a safe driver, collision coverage may be the one to drop first as you’re still covered for freak accidents.

How much is my collision deductible?
You can keep collision coverage and peace of mind by raising your deductible. This will lower overall insurance rates while keeping your policy. However, when doing this, be sure if you raise your deductible to $1,000, that you can actually pay $1,000 out of pocket, should you need to cash in on your policy!

Why Men Pay Higher Auto Insurance Premiums

Insurance is determined on hard facts and statistics, and unfortunately, some men are letting the male side down.

Men traditionally have been paying more for decades, although the gap lessens somewhat after age 25, it never fully closes.

Factors that price male’s auto insurance higher:

  • From 2000-2009, men were found to have been involved in 18 million more accidents than female.
  • In 2011, 71 percent of crash deaths were male victims.
  • Women wear seatbelts 27 percent more often than males.
  • Men are two times as more likely to drive with a suspended license.
  • Women receive 3.41 times fewer reckless driving tickets.

Typically, men are more likely to violate laws for speeding, passing, yielding, resulting in more accidents caused by men, therefore they pay a more expensive policy than women. Another way to look at this is that men are less compassionate drivers, so they are not as safe as women.

If you want to get scientific about the differences, men have more cones in their eyes while women have more rods. Rods provide stronger peripheral vision as well as the ability to see better in the dark, whereas cones give the effect of ‘tunnel vision’ so men may take the curve without hesitation, perhaps less carefully than women.

Although the cones and rods doesn’t explain the aggression factor that seems to be a large contributing factor to men, car accidents, violations, and higher insurance rates, some men have proven to be more defensive about their vehicle, seeking control on the roads. They also rack up around 61 percent of the total miles in the country. Statistically speaking, if they drive more, the more at risk of accidents they are. Of course, not all men are to blame for accidents, and insurance providers do look into driving history when determining insurance price.

Life Insurance For The Military

More than 1.3 million Americans defend our country serving in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, or Coast Guard.

Life insurance is particularly important for military personnel and their families, as the brave soldiers face both combat and dangerous travel. Life insurance aims to provide financial support for the family and loved ones when the insurance holder passes. This can cover funeral expenses, remaining debt, and additional costs, so that your family can focus on healing without being financially strained. Luckily, there are affordable and comprehensive policies that serve these military men and women.

There are two common types of life insurance: term, and whole life. Term life policies provide coverage for a designated period of time. If the policy holder were to die during the time of coverage, the beneficiaries would get paid a lump sum. The benefit of this insurance is that premiums are generally low and do not change over the course of a lifetime.

Whole life insurance is more complex. In a nutshell, theses policies pay a death benefit to survivors, can be used as tax-sheltered investment tools, and may be borrowed against while the policy is active. Premiums are more expensive and may vary on health factors.

If you are an active military member or retired veteran, there are exclusive options available to the armed forces. Injured or ill service members who do not qualify for insurance anywhere else may find a higher-priced policy from an insurance company that caters to the military. Young and healthy soldiers can lock in lower premium rates by taking advantage of health-based policies before illness or injury strikes.

Pests Affect Homeowners Insurance Policies

Unfortunately, infestations are more common than you think.

Insurance companies won’t be too willing to help you clean up the bug or insect infestation. They can be hard to detect with the naked eye, and the bugs can worryingly lay from one to five eggs a day, survive for months without eating, and are prevalent in all 50 states.

Infestations are not covered under homeowners insurance, and the responsibility for clean up falls under normal home maintenance. Some homeowners insurance policies will list animals and insects in the exclusion: bats, rats, mice and other rodents, bees, termites and moths, vermin, birds, fish, reptiles, insects and spiders. Unfortunately, this leaves you with getting rid of them.

Many policies do not cover infestations because it is incredibly difficult to determine costs of damage. Bed bugs get into the fabric of your belongings while mice and termites do damage to your home structure. The different pests, factors regarding behavior, patterns and lifespan make it difficult for insurers to arrive at policy terms and values that homeowners deserve. Damage values vary widely which mean it is impossible to place a cost to protect your home and belongings.

If you find that your home recipes are not killing off the bug population, then be sure to call the exterminators, and keep your insurance company in the loop. If the bugs severely affect your property, your home will decrease in value which will affect your policy.

Keep bugs at bay by keeping your home clutter free, clean, and dry. Ensure all access points are sealed and invest in yearly extermination. If you start seeing the critters, act immediately!

Common Home Insurance Myths Debunked

Homeowners Insurance Facts

Even though homeowners insurance is one of the most common types of insurance policies, it is also one of the most misunderstood. Many people believe that once they invest in a home insurance policy, they are covered from any peril. Make sure that you know the truth about these common home insurance myths to ensure that you find the right amount of coverage for your needs.

  • Replacement cost – if any of your belongings are damaged or destroyed during a covered peril, the replacement cost clause in your home insurance policy will cover the cost to replace the item with a new model that has similar features, no matter what condition the item was in before the damage occurred.
  • Loss of use coverage – if you are not able to stay in your house while it is being repaired, your loss of use coverage will cover your costs to rent a hotel or apartment while your house is being fixed. Keep in mind that loss of use coverage has strict limits of how much your policy will pay for and for how long.
  • Floods – typical homeowners insurance policies will not provide any coverage for damage that is done to your house during a flood. Only a specific flood insurance policy will provide coverage. It is important to keep in mind that flood insurance policies have a 30 day waiting period before they will start providing coverage, so the sooner you invest in a policy, the sooner you will be protected.

When looking for the right homeowners insurance policy to properly protect your house, contact All Nevada Insurance in Las Vegas, Nevada. As an independent insurance agency, we will work with you to make sure that you have the coverage that you deserve, all at the right price to fit your budget.

Cover Your Assets With The Right Umbrella Insurance Policy

Umbrella Insurance Coverage

Just like an umbrella will provide protection for inclement weather, a personal umbrella insurance policy will provide coverage for any disastrous situations that you find yourself in. The additional liability protection that is provided by an umbrella insurance policy will help to ensure that you are not left financially devastated after one incident. Keep these tips in mind to help you find the right policy that will fit with all of your needs.

  • High coverage – in order to qualify for an umbrella insurance policy, many companies will require that you carry high coverage limits with your existing auto and homeowners insurance policies.
  • High deductible – when you invest in a personal umbrella insurance policy, your overall insurance costs will increase. By raising your deductible, you will be able to lower your monthly premium costs. Just make sure that you choose a deductible cost that you can afford at any time.
  • Compare policies – one of the best ways to ensure that you are getting the right price for your umbrella insurance policy is to compare policies. Working with an independent insurance company can help to make this much easier since they will do the comparison shopping for you.
  • Bundle – bundling your umbrella insurance policy with your other existing policies, such as your home and auto insurance can help you save money since you are investing in multiple policies with the same company.
  • Think of your toys – if you own any toys, such as a snowmobile, boat, or motorcycle, you will need separate insurance policies for each item, as well as your umbrella insurance policy to ensure that you have the right amount of coverage.
