The warm summer weather is the best time to take your motorcycle out and enjoy all the beauty of the Mojave Desert. While driving through the desert, there is a possibility of the sun, wind, and dust damaging your bike. Make sure to follow these tips to avoid any damage to your motorcycle.
When it comes to the engine:
- Avoid air-cooled bikes. The hot air of the desert does not allow for proper cooling of the engine.
- Look for water-cooled bikes. These options are becoming more and more common and are a better option when riding in hot weather.
- Avoid panheads and shovelheads. Older models of bikes, pre-1965, have less durability than new models. Parts to repair them are also much scarcer.
When it comes to the climate:
- Protect your tires. The arid climate and the sun’s rays can damage tires. Make sure to regularly inspect tires for cracks and dryness and treat them with rubber protectant to keep them supple.
- Carefully store your bike. When you are not riding your bike, make sure to store it in your garage to protect the paint.
- Protect the leather. Regularly use leather conditioner on any leather that is on your bike, such as saddlebags and other accessories.
When it comes to riding habits:
- Remember your battery. If you do not ride your bike year-round, check the battery of your bike. While you store your bike, use the trickle charging method. The slow charging will keep your battery alive while your bike is not being ridden.
