Halloween Tips for Homeowners

Every year homeowners put themselves at some degree of risk by hosting Halloween parties and by handing out Halloween treats to neighborhood kids. Here are some safety tips for homeowners who want to minimize those risks.

• Keep the exterior of your home well lit.
• Remove any decorations that may impair the path of guests or visitors.
• Keep wet leaves from accumulating on walkways.
• Only hand out factory packaged candies and treats.
• Have a plan for Halloween party guests who may drink too much alcohol.
• Keep your pets away from guests and trick-or-treaters.
• Don’t use candles in jack-o-lanterns. Use glow sticks or a battery operated light  instead.

Of course if you have little trick or treaters yourself, you’ll want to make sure costumes fit well and they can see clearly through masks. Check their candy and provide glow sticks or flashlights when they go out. Also make sure they are accompanied by an adult.
