The holiday season is officially here, which means it is time to break out your festive lights. While finding the perfect placement for all of your holiday decorations, it is important to make sure you know how to stay safe while climbing a ladder. Keep these ladder safety tips in mind to be sure that you do not have any accidents when hanging your holiday decorations.
- Never work alone when hanging decorations. Make sure there is always someone who is nearby that can hold the ladder while you are climbing.
- Always put the ladder on a flat surface before climbing. An uneven surface can cause the ladder to lean and twist, which could cause serious injuries.
- The ladder should be spaced one foot away from the wall of your house for every four feet that it reaches to ensure that it is sturdy.
- Always stay in the center of the rails while on the ladder. Do not lean to one side to try and hang lights or decorations. Instead, climb down and move the ladder over to the side.
- If you are climbing onto your roof, make sure that the top of the ladder is extended at least three feet beyond the edge of the roof.
- Never stand on the top two rungs of a ladder. These are the most unsafe steps and do not give you any sturdy handrails to hold onto.
- Do not use a ladder in high winds since it can easily blow over with you on it or while you are on the roof, leaving you stranded.
