Insurance Policies for Your College Student

With your children going back to school, it is important to make sure that they are protected while they are out of your house. If you have a child that is going to college this year, it is important to look over your insurance policies to ensure that they have enough coverage for any situation.

  • Homeowners insurance. Your already existing homeowners insurance policy should provide the right amount of coverage if your child is moving into an on campus dorm. Homeowners insurance policies will provide a certain amount of liability for belongings that are kept at a different residence, such as at a dorm. Make sure to contact your insurance agent to ensure that you have the right amount of coverage for all of their belongings.
  • Renter’s insurance. The only way to provide the right amount of protection for your child’s assets if they are moving into an off campus house or apartment is to invest in a renter’s insurance policy. Although the landlord will have an insurance policy for the building, it will not cover the assets that are inside. Also make sure that you do not rely on a roommate that has a policy, since they will typically not have enough coverage to cover the belongings of two people.
  • Auto insurance. Even if your child is not taking their car to school, do not remove them from your auto insurance policy, since they may still drive the car when they come home for break. You may qualify for discounts to help you save on your auto insurance if your child goes to school more than 100 miles away, or if the maintain at least a “B” average.

What to Do if Your Car is Totaled

Getting into a car accident is bad enough, and it can be even worse if the accident totals your car. Dealing with an accident that ends in totaling your car needs to be handled slightly different than a normal car accident. Make sure that you know what to do if your car is totaled after an accident.

If your car is totaled, it means that the cost to fix your car is more than the car is worth. After an accident, your insurance company will use a source such as Kelley Blue Book to determine the actual cash value of your vehicle. That value will then be adjusted according to the condition that your car was in before the accident. The cash value of your vehicle will be lower if it was dented, leaking, and rusted, as opposed to being in pristine condition. The final value will also take customization, mileage, and enhancements into consideration.

Once your insurance company comes up with the value of your vehicle, they will then subtract the estimated cost of repairs and salvage value of your vehicle. If the actual cash value of your car is less than the salvage and repair costs, they will consider your car totaled.

If you own your car outright when it is totaled, the company will typically write you a check for the actual cash value of your car, minus your deductible and any other fees. If you are leasing your car, the leasing company will get the same amount of money, and if there is any left over, you will get the balance.

Most importantly make sure that you have the right auto insurance policy that will provide you with the right amount of coverage in case your car is totaled in an accident. Contact the insurance professionals at All Nevada Insurance, for all of your auto insurance policy needs throughout Nevada.

Unplug to Save Money

While it may be easy to simply leave your chargers in the wall when you are not using it, or when your phone or computer is fully charged, it may actually be costing you money. Unplugging your unused chargers can help to ensure that you do not get a surprise on your next energy bill. Keep these tips in mind to help you stay unplugged while you are not using your chargers.

  • Unplug any devices that are rarely used. If you have an extra TV that you keep in the guest room, or an old desktop computer that does not get much use, unplug them until the next time you need to use them.
  • Invest in power strips. A power strip will allow you to control the flow of the power. Being able to control the power means that you will be able to turn off many appliances all at once so that they are not using any electricity while you are not home, or not using the appliances. Consider connecting the power strips to a light switch so that you remember to turn off all the appliances when you leave home.
  • Use sleep modes. Instead of leaving computers and video game consoles paused for long periods of time, set your game console or computer to sleep mode. Just this one simple step can help you save more than $100 each year on your electric bill.
  • Consider upgrades. If you are buying new appliances, make sure to look for models that have an Energy Star rating. These will have a lower standby consumption of electricity and use less electricity in all of their functions.

There are two different types of local business licenses that are available in Las Vegas depending on your business. Staying Safe on the Road as a Senior

More senior citizens than ever are staying on the road later in life. While there may not be any safety issues with baby boomers keeping their licenses longer, it is important to make sure that they are staying as safe as possible while behind the wheel. Enrolling in driving refresher course can help seniors feel confident when they are driving, as well as leading to lower insurance premiums, helping them save some money on a tight budget.

Most older drivers have lower auto insurance premiums since they are more experienced drivers and typically have good driving records. However, after 75, fatal car crash rates start to increase, and they significantly increase after the age or 80. Many of these fatality rates are due to physical fragility, which makes senior citizens more susceptible to having fatal injuries after a crash. There are also many other factors that can contribute to car crashes, including delayed reaction times, decreased vision, serious medical conditions, and decreased cognitive abilities. Although all of these issues can be problematic for people of all ages, they are especially common in people over the age of 65.

There are many driving refresher courses that are available, with the largest one being offered by AARP, called the Driver Safety Program. The course is only offered to people who are 50 years old and older, and can be taken online or in a classroom. The course helps to refresh a person’s knowledge of traffic rules, as well as teaching defensive driving techniques. It also offers seniors information about the dangers of driving while taking certain medications.
