In Nevada, motorcycle owners and operators must obtain the same amounts of insurance coverage for liability as automotive owners and drivers. The state sets minimum coverage requirements, which it last updated on July 1, 2018. At All Nevada Insurance Inc., we want our Las Vegas, NV, clients to understand what motorcycle insurance they legally must carry and what options they have to enhance their insurance coverage.
Legally Mandated Motorcycle Insurance Coverage
Nevada requires both bodily injury liability and property damage insurance coverage for every driver or motorcycle operator. The minimum insurance amounts include the following:
- Bodily injury coverage in the amount of $25,000 per person per accident
- Bodily injury coverage in the amount of $50,000 for all persons per accident
- Property damage coverage in the amount of $20,000 per accident
Without this 25/50/20 policy, you couldn’t legally ride your bike in Nevada.
Smart Ways to Add to the Minimum Required Insurance
Adding to the minimums helps to increase the protection insurance provides for your financial security. You help your policy better protect you by increasing coverage amounts for bodily injury and property damage.
MedPay Coverage
No at-fault party exists in a single-vehicle accident, such as when a deer runs out in front of you. Deer are notorious for not carrying insurance. Adding medical payments (MedPay) coverage to your motorcycle policy provides payment for your medical expenses caused by an accident and those of anyone riding with you.
Collision Coverage
Collision coverage pays for repairing damage to your bike caused by any type of collision, including deer. You pay a deductible that you choose when you purchase your policy; then, the insurance picks up the rest of the bill – up to your coverage limit, which you also choose.
Comprehensive Coverage
Comprehensive coverage protects you from financial loss if your bike gets stolen or damaged by weather events or other unforeseen circumstances. Things like wind, tree limbs, wildfires, house fires, and vandalism all fall under the coverage of comprehensive policies.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)
Nevada offers uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance options. Not every state allows insurers to sell this option. This policy pays for your and your passenger’s medical costs if the at-fault driver or rider does not carry insurance or does not carry enough insurance to cover your loss (medical bills) fully.
